Most schools teach manual on the side. It is all we do.

Plenty of driving schools will happily put you in a manual car. Very few build every single lesson around it. That difference shows up in the first ten minutes, when the clutch starts to bite and you need someone who has taught that exact moment several thousand times.

Naz teaches manual and nothing else. No automatic students, no split focus, no instructor who last drove a manual a fortnight ago.

Naz founded Manual Driving School Melbourne on a simple idea: manual driving is not harder than automatic, it is just taught badly. Given a patient instructor and the right sequence of skills, almost anyone gets it.

Twenty-five years and thousands of students later, that has held up. Learners who arrived certain they would never manage a hill start are now driving manual daily without a second thought.

Total beginner, halfway there, or just need the car for your test? One short phone call and we will tell you honestly what you need – including if that is fewer lessons than you expected.

Learn at your own pace

We pick you up from home. Every lesson is a full hour, one-on-one, building on the last. No two learners move at the same speed and we do not pretend otherwise.

Walk into your test ready

We rehearse the Pakenham test route until it is familiar, then warm you up on the day and hand you the keys to a car you already know.

Common questions

Things learners ask us first

How many lessons will I actually need?

It depends entirely on where you are starting from. A complete beginner with no seat time usually needs a solid run of lessons before test standard. Someone who has been practising with a parent in a manual often needs only a handful of polish sessions. Call and describe honestly where you are at – we will give you a realistic number rather than the one that sells the most lessons.

Can I use your car for the VicRoads drive test?

Yes. That is what the Lesson + Test package at $285 and the Test Only option at $250 are for. Our manual car is roadworthy, fully insured and dual-controlled, which meets VicRoads requirements for a test vehicle.

Is manual really harder than automatic?

It is harder for about three lessons, then it stops being harder. The clutch is the only genuinely new skill, and it is a physical habit rather than an intellectual one – your feet learn it faster than you expect. The payoff is a licence with no restrictions, so you can drive absolutely anything.

Do you pick up from home?

Yes, pick-up and drop-off within our service areas is included in the lesson price. Home, school, work or the station – wherever suits.

What happens if I fail the test?

Plenty of people do, and it is not the disaster it feels like on the day. We go through the assessor’s report with you, work specifically on what was marked down, and get you rebooked. Most learners who fail once pass comfortably the second time.
